Los orígenes de dicho establecimiento se remontan a 1868, cuando se creó con el nombre original de Escuela de Aprendices Marineros, denominación que le fue cambiada por la de Escuela de Grumetes en 1876. Durante el Combate Naval de Punta Gruesa contra la fragata blindada “Independencia” tuvo una destacada actuación dirigiendo una de sus piezas de 70 libras. El desempeñarse como cabo de cañón fue un favor especial que le solicitó a su comandante Carlos Condell, el que le fue concedido. Title A name given to the resource Contralmirante Arturo Fernández Vial Description An account of the resource Contralmirante Arturo Fernández Vial (1858-1931). Egresó como guardiamarina en 1876, y con este grado, Fernández Vial integró la dotación de la corbeta Esmeralda para el Combate de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879. Sobrevivió al combate, fue hecho prisionero y liberado a comienzos de 1880 por un acuerdo de canje. Tras ello ascendió a teniente 1° y tomó parte en el resto de la Guerra del Pacífico. Siendo ya Capitán de Fragata, durante la Guerra Civil de 1891 participó en el bando congresista, destacando su papel en el desembarco de Quintero previo a la campaña final. Entre sus destinos en años posteriores cabe mencionar el mando de diversas escuadras de evoluciones que se organizaban anualmente, en los últimos años del siglo XIX y principios del XX. En 1899 se le concedió su retiro temporal, y entre sus comisiones destacadas de los años posteriores estuvo su labor mediadora durante la huelga de los trabajadores portuarios de Valparaíso de 1903.
