La fotografía fue realizada por un estudio de la calle de San Juan de Dios (actual Condell) de Valparaíso, y es una copia, seguramente producida en cantidades en los años de la guerra del Pacífico, después de conocerse y popularizarse la figura de Prat y su gesta.
