Para la jornada del 21 de mayo de 1879 era teniente 1° y oficial de detall de la goleta cañonera “Covadonga”. Durante el Combate Naval de Punta Gruesa contra la fragata blindada “Independencia” tuvo una destacada actuación dirigiendo una de sus piezas de 70 libras. El desempeñarse como cabo de cañón fue un favor especial que le solicitó a su comandante Carlos Condell, el que le fue concedido. Este buque, junto con el crucero protegido Esmeralda, habían llegado allí el día 20 para resguardar la neutralidad chilena en vista de las operaciones navales entre británicos y alemanes que se desarrollaban en la zona, en el contexto de la Primera Guerra Mundial. En efecto, el día 14, el crucero ligero alemán SMS Dresden había sido sorprendido en la bahía Cumberland de dicha isla por fuerzas navales británicas superiores, y tras un breve cañoneo había sido hundido por sus propios tripulantes. El Esmeralda y el Zenteno recogieron a estos últimos y los trasladaron a Valparaíso con el fin de internarlos en Isla Quiriquina, siguiendo las leyes de la neutralidad.
