Este buque fue hundido por su propia dotación tras ser sorprendido por fuerzas navales británicas superiores, en el curso de la Primera Guerra Mundial, el 14 de marzo. Días después, sus tripulantes fueron recogidos por los cruceros Esmeralda y Ministro Zenteno y trasladados a Chile para su internación, de acuerdo a las leyes de neutralidad.
