Egresó como guardiamarina en 1848 y, tras varios destinos, fue ascendido a Capitán de Fragata en 1865. Al comenzar la guerra del Pacífico era Capitán de Navío, y destacó por su actuación tras ser nombrado comodoro de la Escuadra en agosto de 1879 mandando también una de las divisiones en que ésta se organizó, poco antes de la Batalla Naval de Angamos del 8 de octubre de ese año. Enarbolando su insignia en el blindado Blanco Encalada, tomó parte en esta acción, en la que se capturó el blindado peruano Huáscar. Este jefe naval (1894-1989) egresó como guardiamarina en 1912, y entre sus destinos destacados cabe mencionar la Dirección de la Escuela Naval (1939), la Comandancia en Jefe del Apostadero Naval de Valparaíso (1941) y la Comandancia en Jefe de la Escuadra (1942). En 1946, con el grado de Vicealmirante, fue Jefe del Estado Mayor de Coordinación, actual Estado Mayor de la Defensa Nacional, y se acogió a retiro en 1947. También destacó por ser un prolífico y respetado escritor sobre temas históricos y navales, siendo autor de numerosas crónicas, objeto de recopilaciones, una biografía del Vicealmirante Patricio Lynch y la obra La vida militar de O’Higgins, entre otras. Title A name given to the resource Contralmirante Juan José Latorre Description An account of the resource Contralmirante Juan José Latorre, hacia 1895. Ingresó a la Escuela Naval en 1858, en el llamado “Curso de los Héroes”, y su bautismo de fuego fue en la Guerra contra España de 1865-1866. Siendo capitán de fragata tuvo una destacada actuación durante la Campaña Naval de 1879, primero al mando de la cañonera Magallanes, en acciones como el Combate de Chipana del 12 de abril de dicho año, y el Segundo Combate de Iquique, la noche del 9 al 10 de julio. En septiembre del mismo año se le confió el mando del blindado Almirante Cochrane, con el cual enfrentó exitosamente al monitor o ariete blindado peruano Huáscar en la Batalla Naval de Angamos del 8 de octubre de 1879, logrando su captura. Tras esta decisiva victoria siguió sirviendo durante el resto de la guerra. En 1884 fue ascendido a contraalmirante. En los años posteriores desempeñó importantes cargos, como el de jefe de la Comisión Naval en Francia para estudiar la adquisición de nuevos buques Comandante General de Marina (1887) y ministro de Relaciones Exteriores (1898). En 1908 fue ascendido a vicealmirante. Falleció el 9 de julio de 1912, y en su honor se bautizó como Almirante Latorre a un acorazado entonces en construcción para la Armada en Inglaterra. Title A name given to the resource Contralmirante Juan Williams Rebolledo Description An account of the resource Contralmirante Juan Williams Rebolledo (1825-1910). Era hijo de John Williams Wilson (Juan Guillermos), marino inglés nacionalizado chileno, que concretó la toma de posesión del Estrecho de Magallanes en 1843. Se incorporó a la Armada como Guardiamarina en 1844 y sus primeros destinos incluyeron la fragata Chile, el bergantín Meteoro y la barca Infatigable en 1855 ya era Capitán de Corbeta y se trasladó a Inglaterra para asumir como 2° Comandante de la nueva corbeta Esmeralda. En 1862 fue ascendido a Capitán de Fragata y os siguientes años transcurrieron en comisiones propias de tiempos de paz, como levantamientos hidrográficos. Ello cambió al estallar la Guerra contra España en 1865, cuando le fue asignado el mando de la corbeta Esmeralda, con la cual capturó a la goleta cañonera española Virgen de Covadonga en el Combate de Papudo, el 26 de noviembre de 1865. Tras esta victoria fue ascendido a Capitán de Navío. Durante el curso de dicha guerra asumió el mando conjunto de la Escuadra aliada chileno-peruana y, concluida aquella, siguió al mando de la Escuadra chilena hasta 1874. Dicho año fue designado Mayor General del Departamento de Marina, cargo equivalente al de Jefe de Estado Mayor de la Armada. En 1877 fue ascendido a Contralmirante y en noviembre de 1878 asumió el mando de la Escuadra con ocasión de las tensiones con Argentina por el conflicto por la Patagonia. Alejado el peligro de guerra la Escuadra se disolvió, pero debió constituirse nuevamente en 1879, a causa de la crisis con Bolivia y Perú, por lo cual Williams Rebolledo asumió, una vez más, el mando de la misma. En dicho puesto realizó la primera fase de la Campaña Naval de la Guerra del Pacífico, entre abril y principios de agosto de 1879, cuando presentó su renuncia. En los años de postguerra se desempeñó como miembro de la Junta de Asistencia de la Comandancia General de Armas y Marina en 1886 fue nombrado Intendente de Valparaíso y Comandante General de Armas y Marina y en 1889 asumió como Director de la Escuela Naval. En 1890 nuevamente asumió la Comandancia General de Armas y Marina, puesto en el que lo sorprendió la Guerra Civil de 1891.
