A partir de 1909, el nuevo plan de estudios de la Escuela incluyó dos horas semanales de trabajo en talleres, con el fin de iniciar a los cadetes en el manejo y práctica de herramientas de mecánica y carpintería, que pudiesen serles de utilidad en la compleja y accidentada vida a bordo, como se consideró. Así se complementaban los conocimientos teóricos del futuro oficial con trabajos manuales prácticos. En esta época había dos horas semanales de talleres para 1° y 2° años. Tras la interrupción que significó la Guerra del Pacífico fue restablecida en 1887, y funcionó en las siguientes décadas a bordo de buques o pontones la mayor parte del tiempo. Allí también se hallaba la sección o simulador de buque para las prácticas de maniobras de aparejo, apodado el No te muevas.
