Esta obra representa el edificio donde funcionaba antiguamente la Comandancia General de Marina y Gobernación Marítima, ubicado en el sector de la actual Estación Puerto de Valparaíso, aproximadamente. Allí funcionó también, a partir de 1892, el Círculo Naval (actual Club Naval), que había sido fundado en 1885, en el segundo piso de este edificio. El Círculo permaneció en este local hasta el Terremoto de 1906, que dejó a este inmueble con graves daños, y obligó a dicha institución a funcionar en un local provisorio. El Círculo Naval volvió a funcionar en este edificio luego que terminara su reconstrucción, en 1910, para luego trasladarse en 1918 a su fondeadero definitivo: el edificio de calle Condell que ocupa hasta nuestros días. Este cuadro representa el aspecto que tenía este edificio antes del Terremoto de 1906, y entre sus hitos urbanos es de notar el antiguo Muelle de Pasajeros (1884), hacia la derecha de la imagen, y en segundo plano, el Cerro Alegre. Sherbakov, hacia 1879. Originario de Rusia, estudió medicina en su país, del que debió exiliarse por sus actividades contrarias a la monarquía. En 1875 fue contratado como en la Marina de Chile, y al estallar la Guerra del Pacífico ocupaba el puesto de cirujano del Blindado Blanco Encalada, buque insignia de la Escuadra. Apenas obtenido su título de médico estalló la Guerra del Pacífico y decidió enrolarse en la Marina, siendo asignado a la goleta cañonera Covadonga. Al comienzo del Combate Naval de Iquique, el 21 de mayo de 1879, un proyectil del blindado peruano Huáscar acertó en dicha cañonera y cercenó los pies de Videla, causándole una hemorragia que le ocasionaría la muerte, ese mismo día. Title A name given to the resource Cirujano Francisco Cornelio Guzmán Description An account of the resource Retrato del cirujano de la corbeta “Esmeralda”, Francisco Cornelio Guzmán, sobreviviente del Combate de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879 y capturado por los peruanos. Aquí aparece vistiendo uniforme de marino peruano, proporcionado por sus captores a éste y seguramente a otros prisioneros esmeraldinos, quienes se habían despojado de sus ropas después del hundimiento de la corbeta para poder nadar mejor. El que aparezca con esta tenida indica que se fotografió durante su cautiverio, o bien, inmediatamente después de ser liberado (noviembre de 1879), tras operar un canje de prisioneros. Después de la guerra sería uno de los sobrevivientes de la “Esmeralda” que escribió su testimonio del combate. Al reverso de la imagen se leen las siguientes inscripciones manuscritas: “Cirujano 1° de la Esmeralda Fco. Cornelio Guzmán”. “Cirujano de la ‘Esmeralda’ Cornelio Guzmán con uniforme de marinero peruano”. “Prisioneros Tarma (Perú) Canje de prisioneros.
