La Base Antártica Arturo Prat fue fundada el 6 de febrero de 1947 con el nombre original de Soberanía, siendo la primera base chilena establecida en territorio Antártico. Ésta se había iniciado en agosto de 1914, al mando del célebre explorador Ernest Shackleton y, tras la pérdida de dicho buque y largas vicisitudes, fue rescatada por la escampavía Yelcho de la Armada de Chile, al mando del piloto 2° Luis Pardo Villalón, el 30 de agosto de 1916. La copia de esta fotografía forma parte de un álbum familiar que perteneció al oficial naval Miguel Marín, quien fue posteriormente comandante de la Yelcho, unidad que siguió sirviendo hasta 1958.
