Title A name given to the resource Capitán de Fragata Arturo Whiteside Toro Description An account of the resource Capitán de Fragata Arturo Whiteside Toro (1869-1905). Egresó de la Escuela Naval en 1883, tomó parte en la Guerra Civil de 1891 y en años posteriores desarrolló una relevante carrera como oficial y profesor del mencionado plantel, distinguiéndose por su cultura y conocimientos en temas como hidrografía. Estuvo a cargo de diversos levantamientos de este tipo en destinaciones posteriores a bordo, y en 1904 se le dio el mando del crucero protegido Presidente Pinto. Tras realizar con éste una extensa campaña hidrográfica, su buque varó en el bajo de Velahué, a la salida de Quellón, Chiloé, el 26 de marzo de 1905. Al constatar que la pérdida del crucero era inevitable, el comandante Whiteside dispuso el salvamento de su dotación y luego se quitó la vida, en resguardo de su honor. Este oficial (1846-1909) participó en la Guerra del Pacífico y, al comenzar la Guerra Civil de 1891, se puso a las órdenes del Presidente José Manuel Balmaceda, siéndole asignado el mando de dicho cazatorpedero y de la flotilla gubernamental. Al mando de ésta realizó numerosas incursiones contra la Escuadra congresista, siendo la más destacada la que resultó en el hundimiento del blindado Blanco Encalada, en Caldera. El Fuentealba fue construido como pesquero por ASMAR en Talcahuano, inicialmente para la industria privada y luego transformado en patrullero para la Armada. Botado al agua el 20 de abril de 1966, entregado oficialmente a la Armada el 02 de julio de 1966. El 19 de junio de 1998, en Punta Arenas, se dio de baja del servicio al patrullero WPC Marinero Fuentealba. La unidad prestó servicios en la Tercera Zona Naval durante 32 años, de los cuales 29 fueron de apoyo a Puerto Williams y a las lanchas torpederas. Además, cumplió roles de patrullaje y control de tráfico marítimo en aguas jurisdiccionales chilenas. Desde 1995 pasó a prestar apoyo a Puerto Harris como buque de transporte y servicios generales. Debe su nombre en recuerdo del Marinero Mario Fuentealba Recabarren, quien siendo de dotación del patrullero "Leucotón", entregó su vida después de una heroica actuación al tratar de rescatar en Bahía San Pedro a los sobrevivientes del remolcador "Janequeo", que había naufragado en dicha localidad en medio de un temporal.
