Veterano de las campañas de la Independencia, su actuación más destacada fue hacia finales de las mismas en 1825 cuando, hallándose cautivo a bordo del bergantín español Aquiles, en aguas de la Polinesia, sublevó a la tripulación y logró el control del buque, llevándolo a Valparaíso para ponerlo al servicio de Chile. En agosto de 1836 realizó una audaz incursión preventiva al Callao contra la Confederación Perú-Boliviana al mando del bergantín Aquiles, logrando capturar la barca Santa Cruz, el bergantín Arequipeño y la goleta Peruviana sin derramamiento de sangre. Luego de diversas actuaciones entrega el mando de su bergantín al comandante Robert W. Simpson. Nacido en Ancud, este oficial estudió en la Escuela Náutica que funcionó en dicha ciudad e integró las filas de la Brigada Cívica de Artillería local. Al estallar la Guerra del Pacífico, fue incorporado como subteniente al Regimiento de Artillería de Marina, y se le asignó el mando de la guarnición de la corbeta Esmeralda en tal calidad se batió en el Combate de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879. Concluido el mismo fue hecho prisionero por los peruanos, y liberado a principios de 1880 en virtud de un acuerdo de canje. Reintegrado a su unidad, prosiguió en la campaña sirviendo como jefe de la guarnición del Huáscar, y estuvo en servicio activo hasta la Guerra Civil de 1891. Reintegrado posteriormente, siguió ascendiendo hasta Mayor y luego a Teniente Coronel de Ejército. Sus restos fueron llevados a la Cripta del Monumento a la Marina de Valparaíso. Donado por especialistas en Estado Mayor, 1947. La obra muestra al Director Supremo de Chile de la época, general Bernardo O’Higgins, junto a quienes podrían ser miembros del Gobierno, contemplando el zarpe de la Primera División de la Escuadra Nacional al mando del comodoro Manuel Blanco Encalada desde el sector del Alto del Puerto, Valparaíso. Aquella estaba integrada por el navío San Martín, la fragata Lautaro, la corbeta Chacabuco y el bergantín Araucano, cuyas velas se divisan alejándose.
