Roca, a bordo del Crucero Acorazado O’Higgins, Punta Arenas, 15 de febrero de 1899. Esta cita entre ambos gobernantes fue un gesto de acercamiento durante una época de tensiones vecinales por disputas limítrofes, que habían tenido a ambos países al borde de la guerra el año anterior. Para la ocasión el Presidente argentino se trasladó a dicho puerto a bordo del Crucero Acorazado Belgrano, buque insignia de una división naval, siendo recibido por una fuerza naval chilena similar. Pese a que posteriormente la tensión rebrotó, ella se subsanó por medio de los acuerdos de arbitraje y limitación de armamentos de 1902, conocidos como los Pactos de Mayo.
