Desplazaba 2.545 toneladas, podía alcanzar un andar de 16 nudos y su armamento era un cañón de 3/50” doble propósito, cuatro ametralladoras de 20/63mm y tenía capacidad para llevar dos helicópteros. Su casco estaba especialmente diseñado para las navegaciones en aguas antárticas, donde cumplió numerosas misiones a lo largo de 38 años. Fue enajenado en 1997. Originalmente construido en Astilleros de Cádiz S. A. con el nombre de Don Juan de Austria para la Armada Española y gemelo del Juan Sebastián Elcano, fue adquirido aún inconcluso por Chile, en 1952, fue lanzado al agua el 12 de mayo de 1953 y entregado el 15 de junio de 1954. Su primer crucero de instrucción lo realizó al año siguiente. Desplaza 3.673 toneladas, puede alcanzar los 17,5 nudos de andar y tiene aparejo de bergantín goleta, estando dotado además de un motor auxiliar.
