Ésta se había iniciado en agosto de 1914, al mando del célebre explorador Ernest Shackleton y, tras la pérdida de dicho buque y largas vicisitudes, fue rescatada por la escampavía Yelcho de la Armada de Chile, al mando del piloto 2° Luis Pardo Villalón, el 30 de agosto de 1916. La copia de esta fotografía forma parte de un álbum familiar que perteneció al oficial naval Miguel Marín, quien fue posteriormente comandante de la Yelcho, unidad que siguió sirviendo hasta 1958. Vista por su banda de estribor, junto al transporte Angamos por su banda de babor, imagen tomada durante la Expedición de la V Flotilla Antártica de 1950-1951. El RV John Biscoe fue construido en los Estados Unidos en 1944 y transferido al Reino Unido en 1945 volvió a manos norteamericanas y en 1947 fue adquirido por la mencionada entidad científica británica. Originalmente un buque para la pesca de focas construido en Escocia en 1874, fue adquirido por los Estados Unidos en 1884, y destinado a servicios de aduana marítima, luego a la Guardia Costera (US Coast Guard) y, en 1939, a la Armada de los Estados Unidos. Fue acondicionado para llevar un aeroplano de exploración a bordo, y tomó parte en expediciones antárticas comandadas por el célebre explorador, Contralmirante (Rear Admiral) Richard E. Byrd, entre 1939 y 1941. Posteriormente fue modificado, y durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial tomó parte en labores de patrulla en Groenlandia.
