Participo en la Guerra del Pacifico y contribuyo a la captura del Huascar. En la Revolución de 1891 fue torpedeado en Caldera por las Cazatorpederas Lynch y Condell de los balmacedistas, el 22 de Abril de 1891 hundiendose. Esta tela representa el intercambio de salvas de saludo entre el acorazado chileno Almirante Cochrane, de visita en Rio de Janeiro, y el acorazado brasileño Riachuelo (gemelo del Aquidaban, distinguibles ambos por sus dos chimeneas), el 11 de octubre de 1889. Ese día arribó el blindado chileno, cuya tripulación fue objeto de múltiples agasajos, siendo el momento culminante una suntuosa fiesta ofrecida en el recinto de la Isla Fiscal (Ilha Fiscal, a la izquierda de la imagen), el 9 de noviembre, encabezada por el propio emperador Pedro II. Este evento pasó a la historia brasileña como “El Último Baile del Imperio”, puesto que fue la última actividad oficial de la monarquía, que fue derrocada seis días más tarde por un golpe de Estado que impuso un régimen republicano. Obra obsequiada a Chile con motivo de dicha visita nótese los escudos chileno y brasileño como motivos ornamentales del marco. Giovanni Battista Castagneto (1851-1900) era un pintor y ex marinero de origen italiano, nacido en Génova y fallecido en Rio de Janeiro, quien desarrolló prácticamente toda su carrera artística en Brasil, especializándose en temas marítimos.
