Para esa jornada se hallaba en la 2ª división de artillería del buque (dos cañones Armstrong de 40 libras y cuatro Withworth de 32), bajo el mando del teniente 1° Francisco Sánchez. Pocos momentos antes de hundirse la “Esmeralda” en el combate con el “Huáscar”, Riquelme descargó el último tiro del combate con el último cañón que aún funcionaba, acaso con una de las últimas municiones disponibles, tras la inundación de la santabárbara. Falleció ahogado. Al reverso se lee la nota manuscrita: “Guardia marina Ernesto Riquelme muerto en el combate de la “Esmeralda” contra “Huáscar” en Iquique al 21 de mayo del 879”.
