Este buque, junto con el crucero protegido Esmeralda, habían llegado allí el día 20 para resguardar la neutralidad chilena en vista de las operaciones navales entre británicos y alemanes que se desarrollaban en la zona, en el contexto de la Primera Guerra Mundial. En efecto, el día 14, el crucero ligero alemán SMS Dresden había sido sorprendido en la bahía Cumberland de dicha isla por fuerzas navales británicas superiores, y tras un breve cañoneo había sido hundido por sus propios tripulantes. El Esmeralda y el Zenteno recogieron a estos últimos y los trasladaron a Valparaíso con el fin de internarlos en Isla Quiriquina, siguiendo las leyes de la neutralidad.
