La construcción de este monumento cripta se decidió en 1879, poco después de conocida la noticia de los combates del 21 de mayo, para honrar al Comandante Arturo Prat y la tripulación de la corbeta Esmeralda. Se inauguró en 1886 y en 1888 recibió los restos del Comandante Prat, el Teniente Serrano y el Sargento Aldea. Imagen tomada con anterioridad a la construcción del Muelle Prat como parte de las obras del nuevo Puerto, como puede apreciarse por la mayor proximidad del borde costero respecto del observador.
