Entró a estudiar Medicina en 1875 y cursaba su último año cuando sobrevino la Guerra del Pacífico, ante lo cual se presentó de voluntario. Fue destinado a la corbeta Esmeralda, como ayudante del Cirujano 1° Francisco Cornelio Guzmán, a quien asistió durante la prolongada jornada del Combate de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879. Tras la acción fue hecho prisionero por los peruanos, y liberado a principios de 1880 en virtud de un convenio de canje. Luego obtuvo su retiro del servicio.
