El nombre original de esta obra es Death of Arturo Prat off Iquique during the Chilian and Peruvian War (Muerte de Arturo Prat en Iquique, durante la Guerra Chileno-Peruana), y muestra el momento en que el Comandante de la Corbeta Esmeralda recibe el impacto de fusil que le causó la muerte, sobre la cubierta del Huáscar, en el Combate Naval de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879. Ésta es una tela excepcional en la producción del pintor inglés Thomas Somerscales (1842-1927) por estar centrada en la figura humana.
