Zegers formaba parte de la dotación de la corbeta Esmeralda para el Combate Naval de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879, sobrevivió a la acción, fue hecho prisionero y posteriormente canjeado. En esta obra luce los galones de Teniente 1°, grado al que fue ascendido después de su liberación. En su carrera naval posterior alcanzó el grado de Contralmirante.
