(detalle) Esta obra, dedicada al bombardeo del principal puerto chileno por parte de la escuadra española el 31 de marzo de 1866, en el contexto de la Guerra contra España de 1865-1866, reproduce un momento intermedio del episodio, cuando los buques hispanos ya han bombardeado los Almacenes Fiscales y el centro comercial en torno al eje de la calle de la Planchada (actual Serrano), y dirigen sus fuegos contra el sector del Almendral. En este detalle se aprecia a las fragatas Blanca, Resolución y Villa de Madrid haciendo fuego, mientras que la fragata blindada Numancia, buque insignia, permanece silente.
