Este profesional se hallaba a bordo de la corbeta Esmeralda el 21 de mayo de 1879 y, por circunstancias meramente casuales, lo sorprendió el combate contra el blindado peruano Huáscar. No obstante su condición de civil (el único a bordo), tomó parte voluntariamente en el mismo, se contó entre los sobrevivientes, fue hecho prisionero y posteriormente canjeado.
