En el momento en que fue captada la imagen, la tripulación se dispone a recibir al rey Alfonso XIII, con uniforme y bicornio, en una lancha que enarbola el estandarte real. Dicho puerto fue una de las recaladas del viaje de instrucción realizado entre mayo de 1906 y enero de 1907, con la corbeta al mando del capitán de navío Francisco Nef Jara. La recalada en San Sebastián se produjo pocos días después de producido el gran terremoto que afectó a Valparaíso y la zona central de Chile, el 16 de agosto de 1906 por ello, la tripulación recibió las condolencias del monarca español.
