Esta unidad naval había sido construida en los astilleros Echavarrieta y Larinaga de Cádiz, entrado en servicio en 1928 y prosigue activo hasta hoy. En 1946 los mismos astilleros comenzaron la construcción de un gemelo, el Don Juan de Austria, que fue adquirido por Chile en 1951 y rebautizado Esmeralda su primer viaje de instrucción lo realizó en 1955 y también sigue prestando servicio.
