Fue construido por los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, fue lanzado al agua en 1898, y adquirido por Chile en 1901, como refuerzo de la Escuadra, durante un período de tensiones vecinales con Argentina. Fue uno de los buques de servicio más prolongado de la Escuadra chilena de principios del siglo XX, siendo objeto de una importante modernización en 1942.
