Era parte de una clase de cuatro cazatorpederos o conductores de flotilla clase Almirante adquiridos por Chile en el marco del Plan Centenario de 1910 (Uribe, Riveros, Williams y Goñi), y prácticamente idéntico a los cazatorpederos Lynch y Condell, también parte del mismo plan. Sólo estos últimos alcanzaron a llegar al país antes del estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y tres de las unidades restantes clase Almirante, que pasaron a servir en la Marina británica (Royal Navy) fueron readquiridas al término de dicho conflicto.
