Se aprecian con nitidez su artillería principal de 10 pulgadas en dos montajes simples a proa y a popa, en barbeta, y su artillería secundaria de 6 pulgadas, de tres montajes simples a cada banda. Fue encargado a los astilleros Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. Ltd., Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Inglaterra, su construcción comenzó en 1881 y entró en servicio en 1884. Participó en la Guerra Civil de 1891, formando parte de la Escuadra congresista, y fue vendido a Japón en 1895.
