Esquema de pintura con casco negro, superestructuras y piezas de artillería blancas y mástiles y chimeneas ocres. Nótese también el ornamentado escudo que luce como mascarón de proa. El Chacabuco fue construido por los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, fue lanzado al agua en 1898, desplazaba 4.500 toneladas, podía alcanzar una velocidad de hasta 23 nudos y tenía una protección blindada horizontal o de cubierta de un máximo de 4,5 pulgadas. Su armamento era de dos piezas de 8 pulgadas (203mm), diez de 4”,7 (120mm), 16 de 12 libras, dos ametralladoras y cinco tubos lanzatorpedos.
