Esta unidad de la Armada de los Estados Unidos (US Navy) pertenecía a la clase Omaha, había entrado en servicio en 1924, y era el buque insignia de la Fuerza del Sudeste de la Flota del Pacífico, integrada también por 9 destructores. Tras la entrada de los Estados Unidos en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, dicha fuerza patrulló la Costa Oeste de Centro y Sudamérica, realizando esta labor en coordinación con unidades de la Armada, después que Chile rompiera relaciones con las potencias del Eje, en enero de 1943.
