Nótese la inicial de identificación en la amura, posteriormente sustituida por un numeral, y su dotación formada en cubierta. En esta ocasión arribó junto a su gemelo el Blanco Encalada, buques que habían sido cedidos a Chile por los Estados Unidos mediante préstamos renovables. Ambos eran clase Fletcher y el Cochrane había sido construido en 1943 para servir en la Armada estadounidense (U. S. Navy), con el nombre original de USS Rooks (DD 804).
