Ésta fue originalmente la barca mercante alemana Priwall, destinada al comercio de salitre, que al estallar la Segunda Guerra Mundial se hallaba en Chile y quedó internada. El gobierno germano la donó a Chile en mayo de 1941, siendo habilitada por la Armada como buque escuela. Entre 1941 y 1945 realizó diversos viajes de instrucción y también de transporte de salitre a California. El 28 de febrero de 1945, hallándose frente a las costas peruanas, se declaró un incendio a bordo, que significó la muerte de 20 de los integrantes de su dotación y la pérdida total del buque.
