Ex USS Nashville, era de la clase Brooklyn, integrada por nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy) y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939. El USS Nashville entró en servicio en 1938 y tomó parte activa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente en el frente del Pacífico. Junto con su gemelo el USS Brooklyn, rebautizado O’Higgins, fue adquirido por Chile en 1951. El crucero Prat sirvió hasta 1982, año en que fue pasado a la reserva, siendo enajenado al año siguiente.
