La Yelcho, célebre por el rescate realizado al mando del piloto 2° Luis Pardo Villalón de la expedición antártica de Ernest Shackleton, siguió en servicio hasta 1958, y durante los años ’40 sirvió fundamentalmente en la zona de Puerto Montt y Chiloé. El Chacao integraba la flota del Servicio Marítimo de Ferrocarriles del Estado, conocido familiarmente como Ferronave, que en 1953 se transformó en la Empresa Marítima del Estado (EMPREMAR). Con dificultad se distingue la bandera chilena pintada al costado del Chacao, precaución tomada a causa de la Segunda Guerra Mundial entonces en curso.
