Fue construido en los Estados Unidos como destructor de escolta en 1942 con el nombre original de USS APD 71 Odum, y fue adquirido para la Armada de Chile en 1966, tras ser convertido en destructor transporte, junto a sus gemelos el Uribe y el Orella. Entró en servicio en 1967 cumpliendo múltiples funciones como transporte de tropas de infantería de marina, labores logísticas o integrado a la Escuadra, fue dado de baja en 1991.
