Este buque pertenecía a la clase Deustschland, integrada por seis unidades gemelas, y había entrado en servicio en 1908 para la Marina Imperial Alemana (Kaiserliche Marine) con el nombre original de SMS Schlesien, tomando parte en la Primera Guerra Mundial y continuando su servicio durante la Marina de la llamada República Alemana de Weimar (Reichsmarine). Para la Segunda Guerra Mundial el Schlesien aún se hallaba en servicio de la Marina de Guerra del III Reich (Kriegsmarine) junto a sus gemelos el Hannover y el Schleswig-Holstein, que también había visitado Chile en 1938.
