El Capitán de Fragata Manuel Thomson Porto Mariño (1839-1880) se había recibido del mando de este buque poco después de su captura, y con él se hallaba sosteniendo el bloqueo del puerto entonces peruano de Arica cuando, el 27 de febrero de 1880, entró en combate con las baterías costeras y el monitor Manco Capac. Thomson murió instantáneamente, al acertar este último un impacto directo en el Huáscar.
