A partir de 1909, el nuevo plan de estudios incluyó dos horas semanales de trabajo en talleres, con el fin de iniciar a los cadetes en el manejo y práctica de herramientas de mecánica y carpintería, que pudiesen serles de utilidad en la compleja y accidentada vida a bordo, como se consideró. Ello se hizo también considerando la experiencia de las marinas europeas, de lo conveniente que resultaba complementar la formación teórica de sus futuros oficiales con trabajos manuales prácticos. En esta época había dos horas semanales de talleres para 1° y 2° años. La Escuela Naval fue creada en 1818 como Academia de Jóvenes Guardiamarinas, y funcionó con intermitencias durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX. En 1858 reabrió con el llamado Curso de los Héroes, entró en receso en 1876 y fue reabierta en 1881. Desde 1893 ocupó una nueva sede, donde actualmente funciona el Museo Marítimo Nacional, y en 1967 se trasladó a su sede actual. En 1945 pasa a denominarse oficialmente Escuela Naval Arturo Prat.
