Esta obra, una de las más conocidas de este pintor inglés avecindado en Chile, muestra el momento final del combate naval del 21 de mayo de 1879 entre la corbeta chilena Esmeralda y el monitor o ariete blindado peruano Huáscar, cuando éste acaba de asestarle el tercer golpe de espolón, y aquélla se va a pique. Detalle de la popa y toldilla, donde se aprecia la atmósfera de muerte y confusión propia del combate al centro, un guardiamarina, que puede ser Vicente Zegers o Arturo Fernández Vial, sostiene la driza de una de las banderas que flamean en el pico de mesana, para asegurar el pabellón hasta el final.
