Este artista aborda el tema ya tratado por Thomas Somerscales (obra conservada en el Salón Independencia del Club Naval) pero, a diferencia de éste, que pinta el momento del zarpe propiamente tal, García opta por mostrar a esta fuerza ya en navegación, tras haber abandonado el puerto de Valparaíso, el 9 de octubre de 1818. Encabezando la formación, al centro de la obra, va el navío San Martín, buque insignia del comodoro Manuel Blanco Encalada por su banda de babor navega la corbeta Chacabuco. Por la banda de babor del San Martín, hacia la izquierda de la imagen, se aprecian la fragata Lautaro y el bergantín Araucano. El 28 de octubre dos de los componentes de esta división, el navío San Martín y la fragata Lautaro, enfrentaron a la fragata española Reina María Isabel, que se hallaba surta en Talcahuano, en misión de escolta de un convoy de tropas que se había dispersado. Tras un breve cañoneo, dicha fragata encalló y fue abordada y tomada por los chilenos el resto del día éstos debieron resistir un intenso fuego desde tierra, aparejado a intentos de los realistas de recapturarla. A las 11 de la mañana del día siguiente se pudo desencallar a la María Isabel, y la captura se consolidó, siendo éste el primer encuentro –exitoso- de la Escuadra chilena organizada como tal.
