Title A name given to the resource Retrato del Vicealmirante Luis Gómez Carreño Description An account of the resource Retrato del Vicealmirante Luis Gómez Carreño (1865-1930), óleo sobre tela de Germán von Appen, hacia 2005. Este jefe naval ingresó a la Armada en calidad de aspirante en 1880, tomando parte en fases tardías de la Guerra del Pacífico, tras lo cual entró a la Escuela Naval en 1881. Durante la Guerra Civil de 1891 tuvo un destacado papel al mando de una batería de desembarco que tomó parte en las batallas de Concón y Placilla. En 1903, siendo ya Capitán de Fragata, asumió el mando de la Corbeta General Baquedano, que realizó un extenso viaje de instrucción que circunnavegó el globo. Con ocasión del Terremoto de 1906 tuvo una de sus actuaciones más memorables, al asumir como Jefe de Plaza de Valparaíso, tomando enérgicas medidas para evitar saqueos y otros desmanes. En años posteriores le fueron encomendadas importantes comisiones para traer a Chile nuevas unidades adquiridas para la Armada. Primero en 1917, siendo ya Contralmirante, cuando que fue nombrado Comandante de la División de Sumergibles, lo que implicó partir a los Estados Unidos con el crucero Chacabuco y el transporte Angamos para ir a buscar las seis unidades clase H. Tras una larga y notable travesía dicha División arribó a Chile sin mayores contratiempos, en julio de 1918. En 1920 recibió la misión de traer el acorazado Almirante Latorre y tres cazatorpederos desde Inglaterra, división que arribó a Chile en febrero del año siguiente. En años posteriores ocupó los cargos de Comandante en Jefe de la Escuadra, Jefe de Estado Mayor de la Armada, Director de la Escuela Naval y ministro de Guerra y Marina. Se acogió a retiro en 1924, y es recordado como uno de los jefes navales más destacados de la primera mitad del siglo XX, en especial por su personalidad enérgica y decidida. Integrante del llamado Curso de los Héroes de la Escuela Naval, participó en las guerras contra España y del Pacífico, y era 2° Comandante de la corbeta Esmeralda para el Combate Naval de Iquique del 21 de mayo de 1879. En la postguerra destacó como fundador del Círculo Naval y la Revista de Marina, y autor de trabajos sobre historia naval y marítima. A lo largo de su carrera participó en numerosos levantamientos hidrográficos, como en Isla de Pascua (1870), costa de Aconcagua (1875), además, fue autor de un tratado de hidrografía.
