El carácter recreacional de este sector de la ciudad puerto coexistió con la presencia de la Armada hasta aquellos años. En dicha caleta primeramente se construyó un galpón, hacia 1883, donde se almacenaron las primeras lanchas torpederas con que contó la Armada, lo que explica su topónimo, aún vigente. Posteriormente, en 1921 se instaló allí la primera base de la Aviación Naval, que permaneció allí hasta su traslado a sus nuevas instalaciones en Quintero, en 1927.
