Constituía clase con su gemelo, el Rancagua (2°). Ambos fueron construidos en los astilleros Armstrong de Newcastle-on-Tyne su desplazamiento era de 8.225 toneladas, su velocidad era de 15 nudos y estaban armadas de dos piezas de 4,7 pulgadas (120mm) y dos ametralladoras. El Maipo entró en servicio en 1930. Tanto esta unidad como su gemelo tuvieron una extensa e intensa hoja de servicios, con misiones tan relevantes para el país como viajes periódicos a buscar petróleo al puerto peruano de Talara, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial e inmediata postguerra, período en que este combustible era especialmente escaso.
