Los orígenes de dicho establecimiento se remontan a 1868, cuando se creó con el nombre original de Escuela de Aprendices Marineros, denominación que le fue cambiada por la de Escuela de Grumetes en 1876. Tras la interrupción que significó la Guerra del Pacífico fue restablecida en 1887, y funcionó en las siguientes décadas a bordo de buques o pontones la mayor parte del tiempo. En 1921 se trasladó a su actual sede en la Isla Quiriquina, bahía de Concepción, frente a la Base Naval de Talcahuano. En 1968 se le dio el nombre de Alejandro Navarrete Cisternas. Description An account of the resource Estructura del faro del islote Evangelistas, situado a la salida occidental del estrecho de Magallanes, enfrentando al océano Pacífico. Tras los primeros estudios de 1894, su construcción comenzó en abril de 1895, bajo la dirección del ingeniero George Slight, y fue inaugurado el 19 de septiembre de 1896. Consta de una torre de piedra y cemento de 11 metros de altura, y una casa de estructura metálica concretada, con piedra sacada de una cantera del puerto de aproximación de Cuarenta Días. Esta construcción de sólida arquitectura y sobrio estilo marcó la pauta para los faros que se construirían durante los años siguientes en la zona. Este faro fue el primero de un plan de iluminación del estrecho de Magallanes, proceso concretado entre los años finales del siglo XIX y primeros del XX, donde la figura clave fue el mencionado ingeniero Slight. Del mismo modo, el faro Evangelistas permanece hasta hoy como el hito quizá más relevante y emblemático de dicho proceso. En 2009 fue declarado Monumento Nacional. Fotografía original.
