Title A name given to the resource Fragata Covadonga, década de 1950 Description An account of the resource Fragata Covadonga, clase River, construida en Canadá, originalmente para la marina de dicho país. Junto a las corbetas clase Flower, estas fragatas se contaron entre las unidades ligeras producidas en mayor cantidad durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pensadas sobre todo para labores de escolta de convoyes y antisubmarina. Se construyeron 139 unidades en Gran Bretaña, Australia y Canadá, entre 1940 y 1944. Fueron pensadas como una mejora de las mencionadas corbetas, por ser más grandes y robustas, y por lo tanto, más aptas para las difíciles aguas del Mar del Norte y Atlántico, especialmente durante la prolongada campaña de desgaste contra los sumergibles alemanes. Esta característica también parecía hacerlas adecuadas para los difíciles mares del sur de Chile, donde predomina un clima análogo. Chile adquirió tres unidades de este tipo, bautizadas Esmeralda, Iquique y Covadonga. Esta última, la ex H. M. C. S. Sea Cliffs, fue construida en los astilleros de George T. Davies Shipbuilding Co., Lauzon, Quebec, en 1944. Su desplazamiento era de 2.216 toneladas, su velocidad era de 20 nudos y requerían una tripulación de 140 hombres. Se entregaron desarmadas, su armamento fue instalado en Chile, y presentaba algunas diferencias respecto de su configuración original consistía en un cañón de 120mm (4,7 pulgadas), uno de 102 mm (4 pulgadas), 2 ametralladoras antiaéreas de de 40 mm. y 4 de 20 mm, 2 morteros y 2 deslizadores para cargas de profundidad. Posteriormente, se les agregó un lanzador de proyectiles antisubmarinos Hedgehog (Erizo). La Covadonga izó el pabellón chileno el 30 de marzo de 1946, tras un viaje en flotilla con sus compañeras y el apoyo del buque madre de submarinos Araucano, llegaron a Valparaíso el 29 de junio. La Covadonga sirvió hasta diciembre de 1966. Tras su baja como unidad activa, pasó a ser buque cuartel para la nueva flotilla de lanchas torpederas, con sede en Puerto Williams, a partir de marzo del año siguiente, permaneciendo allí largos años, hasta que, utilizada como blanco, fue echada a pique en el curso de un ejercicio de tiro, en 1987.
