En 1941 fue donada por el III Reich a Chile y utilizada como buque escuela de la Armada y también para transportar salitre hacia los Estados Unidos. Fue adquirido por Chile en 1952, bautizado Esmeralda, entregado en junio de 1954 y arribó a Valparaíso el 1° de septiembre de ese año. En su Primer Crucero de Instrucción, que se extendió entre el 16 de marzo y el 23 de septiembre de 1955, estuvo al mando del Capitán de Fragata Víctor Wilson Amenábar, y su itinerario comprendió recaladas en Coquimbo, Isla de Pascua, Papeete (Tahiti), Apia (Samoa), Apra (Guam), Yokohama, Pearl Harbour, San Francisco y San Pedro, estos últimos en California, Estados Unidos.
