Fue construido en los astilleros Bow McLachlan & Co. de Cowes, Escocia, el 23 de octubre de 1929. Constituía clase junto a los Cabrales (1°), Colo Colo (4°), Galvarino (3°) y Janequeo (4°), todos los cuales entraron en servicio en 1931, siendo también denominados remolcadores de alta mar. Title A name given to the resource Escampavía Yelcho (1°) hacia 1930 Description An account of the resource Vista de babor del escampavía Yelcho. Fue construido en Greenock, Escocia, en 1906 como un buque originariamente civil, y fue adquirido por la Armada a la Sociedad Ganadera Industrial Yelcho y Palena, en 1908 para ser utilizado principalmente en aguas australes y para el servicio de faros. Desplazaba 467 toneladas, daba una velocidad máxima de 14,8 nudos y posteriormente fue armado con un cañón Hotchkiss de 37mm. Fue destinado al Apostadero Naval de Magallanes donde se hallaba en 1916, cuando le tocó realizar su misión más célebre. Ella se gestó después que el explorador Sir Ernest Shackleton, recurriese al gobierno chileno por ayuda para rescatar a sus hombres, tripulantes del buque Endurance, que llevaba a la Expedición Imperial Transantártica británica, los que se hallaban en calidad de náufragos en la isla Elefante, Antártica, tras el naufragio de dicha nave. La respuesta de Santiago fue autorizar al jefe del Apostadero Naval de Magallanes a organizar una expedición de rescate, la que fue confiada al piloto 2° Luis Pardo Villalón, al que se le dio el mando del Yelcho. Pese a ser un buque totalmente inadecuado para la riesgosa misión era el único disponible, y zarpó desde Punta Arenas el 25 de agosto de 1916, llevando también a Shackleton a bordo. Tras una navegación atinada y prudente, sorteando riesgos como la niebla y los hielos con los escasos medios de navegación disponible, el escampavía de Pardo llegó a la isla Elefante a las 13:30 del día 30, en medio de la alegría de los náufragos británicos, procediendo a embarcarlos en un corto lapso, para evitar cualquier riesgo. Tras un viaje de regreso no exento de dificultades, el Yelcho estaba de vuelta en Punta Arenas el 3 de septiembre con los 22 expedicionarios rescatados. Siguió una singladura hasta Valparaíso, donde arribó triunfalmente el día 27 posteriormente, Shackleton y Pardo serían recibidos por el Presidente de la República, Juan Luis Sanfuentes. En los años y décadas posteriores, el Yelcho siguió prestando servicios de la forma silenciosa pero constante que caracteriza a las embarcaciones de su tipo, hasta fue dado de baja en 1958. Después del desguace, su proa fue rescatada e instalada primero en Punta Arenas, en 1965, y luego de forma definitiva en Puerto Williams, en 1977, donde se conserva en calidad de monumento.
