Éste fue originalmente el velero salitrero alemán Priwall, y parte de una serie de los ocho últimos buques a vela para la célebre naviera alemana Laeisz, construida en Hamburgo con aparejo de barca y entrada en servicio en 1920 en 1939, al estallar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, quedó internada en Valparaíso. En 1941 fue donada por el III Reich a Chile y utilizada como buque escuela de la Armada y también para transportar salitre hacia los Estados Unidos.
