Ambos eran de la clase Brooklyn, integrada por nueve unidades construidas para la Armada de los Estados Unidos (U. S. Navy) y terminadas entre 1937 y 1939, siendo sus nombres originales USS Brooklyn y USS Nashville, respectivamente. Ambos tomaron parte activa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y mientras el primero participó en el teatro de operaciones del Mediterráneo, el segundo hizo otro tanto en el frente del Pacífico. Databa de 1868, y su altura original de tres pisos había sido reducida a dos más una mansarda tras un incendio acaecido en 1878. Los daños que sufrió en el sismo de 1906 fueron reparables, y siguió cumpliendo su función hasta 1950.
