Fue construido por los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, fue lanzado al agua en 1898, y adquirido por Chile en 1901, como refuerzo de la Escuadra, durante un período de tensiones vecinales con Argentina. Fue uno de los buques de servicio más prolongado de la Escuadra chilena de principios del siglo XX, siendo objeto de una importante modernización en 1942. Esquema de pintura con casco negro, superestructuras y piezas de artillería blancas y mástiles y chimeneas ocres. Nótese también el ornamentado escudo que luce como mascarón de proa. El Chacabuco fue construido por los astilleros Armstrong de Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, fue lanzado al agua en 1898, desplazaba 4.500 toneladas, podía alcanzar una velocidad de hasta 23 nudos y tenía una protección blindada horizontal o de cubierta de un máximo de 4,5 pulgadas. Su armamento era de dos piezas de 8 pulgadas (203mm), diez de 4”,7 (120mm), 16 de 12 libras, dos ametralladoras y cinco tubos lanzatorpedos.
