Vista del monumento después de haber sido inaugurado por el Presidente Domingo Santa María. La iniciativa de erigir un monumento en honor a los marinos de la Esmeralda y la Covadonga surgió apenas conocida la noticia de los combates navales de Iquique y Punta Gruesa, y se concretó en este monumento que también es una cripta, destinada a ser la sepultura de algunos de los marinos que se hallaron en dichas acciones.
